Current

Wednesday, 20 June 2012 (numbed by her light)
9:35am

My recap of episode 11 of the second season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (it's an important episode, so it gets its very own recap) is now up. And I'm spending the day working at Marta's, because she's finally on her own summer break from work, so there's no reason for me not to be here with her. Plus I like being with her, so there's that.

1:33am

Lunch at Kitchen Kura. Okonomiyaki will be the death of me yet.

Tuesday, 19 June 2012 (rapture, at last)
8:27am

And then, things kick into high gear.

Woke up this morning to find that the book I idea I queried back in back in April, then one for which I got a series of answers which weren't no but were instead maybe! i'll get back to you has been passed along to a higher-up, who then passed it along to another higher-up, the one who presumably can make the actual decision, and their response is essentially that sounds like a great idea! can you send me a proposal?, which means it's time to actually write the proposal. I hadn't done it yet because there wasn't any point in doing it without getting certain go-aheads, and I do believe I've gotten that go-ahead. I told them I'd get the proposal to them by the end of the week, and they were cool with that.

And I'll start on it first thing tomorrow, because today will be taken up on a deadline for yet another anthology essay, one which had actually been due on June 1 but for which I begged an extension. So. Time to do that.

9:54am

New article up on the weekly, this one about Starcade.

11:52pm

Marta and I went to karaoke at the Cat Club with Ilene and Porter this evening. Didn't stay long, since I really have a lot of work to do tomorrow (and Thursday), but we stayed long enough for Marta to sing They Might Be Giants' "Birdhouse in Your Soul" and for me to do Paul McCartney's "Let Me Roll It." And that's just long enough.

Monday, 18 June 2012 (the iron soul of nothing)
10:31am

Got an advanced reading copy of that one anthology. It's looking pretty good, and I'm very happy how the story turned out.

4:12pm

I haven't been so happy with how my hair's been looking lately, particularly the roots (which still look, well, rootier than I'd hoped they would with the progessively darker squid), so this afternoon is dedicated to reblondification of the front half of my head, and recoloring of my bangs. I can't really concentrate on writing while I have bleach and/or color on my head, but thankfully, there are other things I can do to be productive.

9:33pm

Mission accomplished! Gods, but having freshly recolored hair does wonders for my mood and self-image. Because I'm shallow like that.

I don't know if it was the KQED article or what, but we have a huge crowd at Bad Movie Night for Cowboys & Aliens. It's a belated birthday present!

Saturday, 16 June 2012 (it took the night to believe)
11:17am

For my birthday excursion, Marta and I are having brunch at El Toreador in West Portal having walked (walked!) here from her place. After this, we're going across the street to see Prometheus. It's a gamble, going to see a summer blockbuster on a Saturday, but damnit, I wanna see the movie—it's probably the only new movie I'll see in a theater this summer—and it's my birthday. So.

3:45pm

Except for the fact that the loud, bass-heavy sound of Rock of Ages was bleeding through the walls (and that's with an auditorium between us—I feel sorry for the nice old people next door who were just trying to watch The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), it went very well, and it was a small, quiet audience, just the way I like it. And I enjoyed the movie a lot, too.

10:12pm

We walked back to Marta's place, attempted to rest for a while, then went on the final leg of the birthday adventure: at Spices! in the Richmond, were I had the STiNKy! Tofu Sautéed w/ Seafood in Spicy Casserole for the first time in years. So very delicious, and it's been an excellent birthday all around. Also, my article about Mad Magazine's Alien parodies is getting a little love on Reddit, so that's cool.

Friday, 15 June 2012 (packed with new faces)
10:16am

Couldn't help but notice that the Subisidized Direct Stafford Loan isn't listed as financial aid option for this next semester. Unsubsidized, sure, but not subsidized. I wrote the Financial Aid Office, and they told me that beginning July 1 of this year, graduate students are no longer eligible for subsidized loans. Awesome.

12:03pm

The outrage post is up. I'm going to try to not think about it anymore, because having to devote so much time to being hated on by conservative Christians has left an unpleasant feeling in my soul.

12:55pm

Just got asked to read at Perverts Put Out in July. That helps my soul some, as does seeing Bad Movie Night listed in an article called "Eight Things To Do with Dad this Father's Day" on KQED's blog.

Thursday, 14 June 2012 (the old maxim)
12:42pm

Working on the galley proof version of my story for that one anthology. As always, it's tricky to tell the difference between "an actual typo I made" and "something they rewrote in their own voice."

1:08pm

The weekly editor just asked me if I have time to do a "quick outrage post." It's very ugly subject matter (conservative Christians attacking and dehumanizing trans people, basically), but, I'm doing it.

4:31pm

Dunno if it was as quick and/or as ragey as they were necessarily hoping for, but the editor likes it, though it's not going live until tomorrow because it needs a little more work. In the meantime, I'm heading to KrOB for yet another Jerry Lewis movie.

7:58pm

KrOB and I have watched lot of Jerry Lewis movies lately, so I thought I was prepared for the worst, but holy fucking shit Hardly Working. Wow. Just, wow.

9:42pm

I've been walking around in the Castro, since it's a nice-ish summer night, and Marta is joining me soon. Can't beat that.

Wednesday, 13 June 2012 (waiting for that feeling)
10:32am

My recaps of episodes 9 and 10 of the second season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic are now up.

12:02pm

Two posts in one day! The article the new editor pitched to me, a review of The Gavin Newsom Show, is now up. Must be because it's my birthday week or somethin'.

3:52pm

Just to even things out, the sound keeps dying on my laptop. That's not so good.

Tuesday, 12 June 2012 (ruined from underexposure)
10:59am

An article I spent much of this weekend working on, about Mad Magazine's Alien parodies over the years, is up on the weekly. It's not the one I was assigned (which I've finished), but one that feels relevant, what with the prequel Prometheus having just come out and all.

Monday, 11 June 2012 (tender is the night)
10:21am

Davina wrote to apologize for not being there last night, she wasn't able to make it because her teenage daughter was doing her own Bad Movie Night-style birthday party at home, and Daisy (who did make it) says her teenage son wants to do one for his birthday in August. We've tapped into the lucrative youth market!

9:26pm

Just about done with an article my new editor at the weekly pitched to me. It's a good sign, I think, me getting asked to do specific things. It means they trust me and will hopefully give me more assignments and I'll be able to pay the rent and stuff.
