Friday, 20 July 2012 (seeing it from a mile away) 9:48am New article up on the weekly, about a remastered version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail at the Lumiere. I like that they give me film-related stuff to write about. 8:59pm Marta and I went to a poetry reading in the Haight tonight, and we even walked to there and back from her place, which made us both very proud. Still, though, the Haight at night. Holy shit, I'd forgotten how seedy it can get.
Thursday, 19 July 2012 (false activism) 9:44pm No bike delivery this morning, though I did have tea with Ilene at her place ths evening. And in a month or so, her and I and Porter head to Everfree.
Wednesday, 18 July 2012 (letting them die) 8:12am My recaps of episodes 18 and 19 of the second season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic are now up. So there's that. And I've also been talking to one of my former weekly editors, and I'm about to start freelancing for them at their new place. It would be a lot better if it wasn't to replace the work-work job, but there's not much I can do about that. 11:39pm Off to pick up Marta from the airport. The domestic terminal, this time. 2:01pm Yay. She's back.
Tuesday, 17 July 2012 (tilting at every windmill) 9:31am Because she emailed me yesterday to ask where I've been, I did an hour of cardio this morning with Rita. It was good to catch up, especially since the original plans for Davina and Mouse to drop my repaired bike back off have been postponed until Thursday. Also, my article about Christopher Nolan's Batman movies playing in 35mm at the Balboa theater is up, so that's neat. 7:34pm At KrOB's, watching Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in The Stooge (to be followed, for better or worse, by Jerry solo in The Ladies' Man), and I just got two important emails. One is from Marta, saying that her flight from Chicago to San Francisco has been delayed until tomorrow morning, which is probably just as well, since it means we'l both get a full night's sleep. And she can stay at her mom's place, so that's no problem. The more troubling email is that from the marketing guy, saying that because of changes in things and stuff, you now fall outside the range of qualifiers for the new business model here. No more assignments will be forthcoming but you will, of course, be paid as usual for work completed. Thank you for your past service; we wish you well. So, basically, I just lost the job which pays for the majority of my rent every month. Frak frak frak.
Monday, 16 July 2012 (a three cat night) 10:01am My article on the weekly about the 1992 NBC Olympics Triplecast is up, and more importantly, I'm heading back home. It's been a good week here. 2:14pm The drive home probably took a little longer than Perdita would have preferred, what with me stopping to enjoy the thoughtful political discourse along Highway 152 and then for a burrito at the Cotija Taco Shop in Los Banos and then again for fruit-shopping at Casa De Fruta and some indie stands in Gilroy, but she managed.
Sunday, 15 July 2012 (single but big) 2:43pm Heading back tomorrow, and Marta arrives back in San Francisco (or the airport, anyway) on Tuesday. Just in time. 6:47pm Night-before-leaving-town dinner with my mom and Cal at Casa Corona, the restuarant that replaced the shuttered El Toro Tambien. For as much of an emotional connection as I have to El Toro Tambien, having grown up with it, I gotta admit that the new place is better.
Saturday, 14 July 2012 (trying to assess the damage) 4:45pm Continuing to not get as much personal work done as I'd like, particularly on the current novel. On the other hand, I do have three articles going live on the weekly next week, so that's something. I also really haven't been outside of my mom's house (aside from swimming and/or getting veggies from the garden) since Wedensday, and I think I'm getting a tad antsy. On the other hand, I spend a don't spend any money when I don't go anywhere. So.
Friday, 13 July 2012 (in perfect sync) 2:40pm The article that I don't especially care about, the glasses thing, is up. At least I was able to amuse myself with the picture, and by linking to a rather inappropriately appropriate video.
Thursday, 12 July 2012 (the rank and file) 11:44am Not really being as productive this week as I might have hoped, outside of work-work stuff. Alas. At least I can always fall back on the hey, i'm on vacation! excuse. Spent a lot of time working on a pitch for a major comedy website before realizing that it wasn't worth the time and effort. At least now I know.
Wednesday, 11 July 2012 (beyond complimenting) 9:55am I've been going swimming in the afternoons with my mom, and I also went swimming by myself this morning. Hope to keep doing it twice a day while I'm here, because yay exercise, plus I'm not doing much else besides sitting and writing. Which is fine. Also, my recaps of episodes 16 and 17 of the second season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic are now up. And I'm having lunch with my dad later. 3:12pm We had lunch at DiCicco's, as we so often will (and the pizza at which doesn't even begin to compare to the pizza at Cafe Zoetrope or Trattoria Pinocchio, go figure.) My dad is looking increasingly old and frail, probably because he is old, but he's also not quite as old as my mom, who looks much, much younger. Not for the first time, I'm glad that I've taken more after her than him. 4:23pm Another pitch from the editor, this one for some free-glasses thing at a church in Richmond next week. The great thing is, all I really need to do is report the vitals, maybe throw in a joke or two, and I get paid the same as if it was something I really cared about (like the Pony recaps). There's a lot to be said for that.
