Monday, 30 April 2012 (no less vulnerable when protected) 1:34pm I tried to get some work-work done in the morning, but in addition to not getting much sleep last night and dealing with ome Perdita-ick this morning, it just didn't happen. Did some errandingthe Smart and Final in the Richmond has a pretty good produce selection, who knew?and am now setting about recoloring my bangs, for they desperately need it. 10:01pm In the middle of the latest of many online meetings for my Libr 202, the one that I've had a questionable grade in this far. One of our group members, though very sweet, is also very old and doesn't really understand the majority of what we're doing, especially things that involve computers and software. And, since the class is online, it all involves computers and software. It's making things tricky at best, but damnit, I am going to pass this class.
Sunday, 29 April 2012 (a little bit crass) 10:42pm Pretty good turnout at Bad Movie Night for The Last Dragon, but in spite of the presence of Ennui and Jack, it was a tough crowd and I got very few laughs. Oh well. Bombing is good for the soul. And Porter assures me that us going to Everfree this August, which I'd thought was off, is still going to happen. But I won't believe it until August arrives and we're there, and whatever happens, happens.
Saturday, 28 April 2012 (your voice is not enough) 3:26pm At Marta's urging, I am finally moving forward with getting a passport. I'll probably stall out at the part where I have to pay money for it, but progress is being made otherwise.
Friday, 27 April 2012 (nothing to sell) 9:11am I was asked by a friend of an acquaintance, someone looking for "all that is strange in San Francisco", if I would be interested in featuring in a "short video profile." Um, no. I trust my hackles, and they rose fast at that one. At Marta's earlier than usual today, since she's not working. Though we will get work done, we will. 10:12am Once again, I am reference, this time from the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic recap that went live on Wednesday: Sherilyn Connelly of SF Weekly considered the episode as "one of Season 1's most complicated, carefully constructed stories, working with what we know about the characters and expanding their backstories while continuing to build the show's world". Connelly continued that it was "a confident episode that would have been a great season finale".[2]So, that exists.2. ^ Connelly, Sherilyn (2012-04-25). "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Season 1, Episode 23". SF Weekly. Retrieved 2012-04-25. 4:24pm Needing to get out of the house, Marta and I are at the Cal Academy of Sciences, visiting the penguins and the sandabs, and of course going through the Rainforest. Still haven't decided if I like it better during the day or night, though there aren't nearly as many nighttime opportunities. 7:12pm We considered going out on an adventure for dinner (Mozzeria in the Mission, to be precise), but decided to keep it simpler, so we're at Hotei. It does te job nicely.
Thursday, 26 April 2012 (never to know how the enemy feels) 10:31am On my way to meet the publisher for dinner at The Cove last night, I ran into an old friend, someone whom I tend to only ever see when they're boozing at Badlands, but also always makes a point of calling my name and coming over to say hello, so mad points for that. I told him where I was off to, and he said and you're wearing your purple hat for the occasion! Well, yeah. I was wearing my Derpy shirt, too. It's not like I was going to job interview nor, was I trying to otherwise impress them with my neatness. Indeed, as the publisher pointed out when I sat down at the table, this was the first time they'd seen me where I wasn't on stage with lights on me, and almost always wearing ears, for that matter. (One of those times had been pre-Frolic, in fact, so really, my casualness could not have been less of an issue. Anyhow, it was a pleasant night. The publisher confirmed that while they of course hope the book does well, it's also not the kind of book that traditionally does well for them (which stands to reason, because if my work was anyone's idea of a sure bet, both Bottomfeeder and Landing on Water would have been both been long since published), but it's the kind of book which they have the liberty of publishing because it doesn't have to do especially well. Which makes perfect sense to me. Now I just have to finish the damn thingone of the first things they asked was: so, when will the book be ready?which is not likely to happen until the semester ends in a few weeks. But soon.
Wednesday, 25 April 2012 (the information need) 9:11am The recap of episode 23 of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is now up. Whether or not there's an uptick of readership since the podcast last week, I cannot say, nor does it especially matter. 6:43pm I suspect that the panhandlers in the Castro who are shouting got any change! we're lgbt! may in fact not be, since no queer person in the history of ever has referred to themselves as LGBT. Lovely attempt at pandering, though. 9:32pm Having after-dinner drinks at the glass coffin, officially known as Twin Peaks Tavern, with the publisher and her partner. (First time I've been here since my first date with Kristen, I believe.) It's been a good evening. 10:13pm The evening started with a handshake and ended with a hug, so, yes, I'd say it went well.
Tuesday, 24 April 2012 (something's going to break) 10:13am Another Bottomfeeder rejection. They don't even phase me at this point. 5:32pm The local publisher, the one who'll be publishing a book of my stories once I actually finish and submit the damn thing, will be in town tomorrow night (she lives in Berkeley) and would like to have dinner. That's a good sign, right? It's also a very scary sign.
Monday, 23 April 2012 (evolution of research) 2:41pm Went to the 1pm, older-folks class at the Y this afternoon. Usually level of hairy-eyeballness. Nothing I'm not accustomed to. 3:11pm Still no EBT card. This has officially become absurd, and I now must call them and find out what's up. 3:32pm That they don't know why the card hasn't arrived after a month, and I'm going to go pick up a new one in person. Damn. I was this close to beating them system, by which I mean not setting foot in their office, which I have an good authority is a very depressing place. I'm told the card should be ready in half an hour, and I can pick it up anytime these next seven days. I briefly considered doing it on Wednesday morning after I leaving Marta's but, frak it. No time like the now. They're open until five, and better to sacrifice an afternoon than a morning. 4:55pm Oh, that neighborhood, down the street from what until recently was the Citadel. Somehow, it's seedier during the day than at night. Go figure. Anyway, mission accomplished, and it was fairly painless, since there was no line at all, so I got in and out in five minutes. Hooray for small, if delayed, miracles. 8:29pm My first year of grad school is almost over, and I have yet to fully process the fact that I'm in grad school to begin with. Life is weird.
Sunday, 22 April 2012 (epistemological emphases) 11:42am Brunch with Marta at Crepevine. Once again, too much of the wrong stuff, my own decision. 3:12pm Working at Marta's. By all accounts it's another beautiful, near-hot day in San Francisco, but it's foggy and chilly in this corner of the Sunset, and I'm more than fine with that. somtetime after midnight Damn. I was really expecting a better turnout at Bad Movie Night tonight for Gymkata. That's what I get for having expectations, I suppose.
Saturday, 21 April 2012 (an unavailable citation) 2:36pm It's a beautiful day ouside, so of course I'm spending it working at home. Finished up a new My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic recap as well as a writeup of a 1974 martial arts flick called Slaughter in San Francisco. Sunny weather is so inspiring! The house on the other side of my backyard has construction going on. I don't care for the looks of the construction guys, and I think some of them may have been the guys who were out smoking at three in the morning last week. I guess I'm stuck with them for the foreseeable future. Still no EBT card. 5:32pm In Golden Gate Park again with Marta, this time going throuh the Botanical Gardens. We spent some time in the Redwood Grove, as I always must.
