Tuesday, 19 March 2002 (love, alice) 9:14pm Part of me wants to write my nieces and ask them not to think of me when they see ads for Sorority Boys. But that'd be a bit like asking them not to think about a purple elephant. Call me p.c. if you want (I really don't care; the term is meaningless, an all-purpose piece of vernacular slander and a crutch for lazy minds, and as such it holds no power over me), but I believe that someday cross-dressing humor will go the way of the minstrel show. It may take a generation or two, but it'll happen. | ||
Sunday, 17 March 2002 (cottoncandy underground) 9:00am Timeslip! I got zapped yesterday (210 hours total now), so as far as my diary's concerned it happened pretty quickly. It helps that sfgoth was down for the last few days. Considering how much I pay for it (which is to say, nothing), I can't complain too much. I hadn't shaved since Thursday morning, resulting in no small amount of self-consciousness at work on Friday. Naturally, as a result I spent an inordinate amount of time in meetings, therefore allowing other people to get a close look under bright lights. I'm sure nobody noticed, but of course it felt like they must. The real fun comes tomorrow when I go in with a still-bumpy face. On the plus side, it's looking like my contract will be extended at least through the first week of April, possibly longer. I'm doing a pretty good job of keeping the fantasies of getting hired back at bay.
The upgrade-o-rama continues. I got a new video card for the computer, one with both an rca and s-video
out plus whole bunches of neat video-editing features which I haven't even begun to figure out yet. The
net result, though, is that I can use the teevee as a monitor, and that's been one of my goals for a long
time now. The ironic part is that the best picture quality is at 640x480, but this particular card is so highfalutin that it only goes as low as 800x600. (It's like
Windows XP not having a "Show Desktop" button on the taskbarwhy are computer upgrades
always so faustian?) We also got a new scanner last night, since it was on sale for less than the cost of
getting the necessary scsi-to-USB adapter for Maddy's old scanner. The actual federal refund check hasn't
arrived yet, though the one from the state has, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time...
