Tuesday, 20 December 2011 (insomnia and anxiety) 11:04am A new Landing on Water rejection, this one from someone who also rejected Bottomfeeder, saying that ...I still felt it leaned too far in the direction of being a chronicle of relationships rather than a thorough and meditative examination of the experience of being transsexual. That's a completely valid criticism, becayse as My Agent points out, I'm not writing a meditative examination of my experiencethat's a different book entirely. Not sure I would know how to write such a thing, even if I wanted to, which I don't. I have asked her to add both writing for the SF Weekly and performing SF Sketchfest to the bio she uses when pitching me. They probably won't be the hey, this person is actually somebody! tipping point for publishers, but every bit helps. And if those things make me too San Francisco, which has been a problem before, then I'm at a loss. 8:12pm At the Cal Academy of Sciences with Marta. It's been a spectacularly rough day between us, lots of crying and meltdowns about our differing expectations about our relationship and our intimacy. But all is warm and well in the rainforest.
Monday, 19 December 2011 (an awkward pause) 11:01am Jim Fourniadis, Mike Spiegelman, and I are now officially listed as the hosts of Bad Movie Night on the SF Sketchfest site I'm very proud that we'll be offering a slightly cheaper and extremely obscure option for all the people who aren't able to get tickets for Dan Harmon, Kevin Smith, or Wil Wheaton that night. 1:42pm Picked up my old laptop from the repair place. (It took a bit longer than it should have, since they misplaced the AC adapter. Lovely.) Brought it home, plugged it in, and wouldn'tchaknow, the screen is working. Barely. It'll probably stop working sometime soon, but in the meantime, this is going to make actually retrieving the data from it much easier. 6:38pm Having dinner with Marta and her ex-boyfriend at Loving Hut. Not the best cult-run vegan restaurant I've been to, and not the worst. sometime after midnight I've been crossing a lot of lines lately. It's good to know where they are.
Sunday, 18 December 2011 (favourite moments of mutual ecstasy) 10:34pm Pretty good turnout at Bad Movie Night tonight for our new holiday tradition Christmas Evil, including Ennui's ex-girlfriend Jessie. (I would have had her sit in the front row with me, but she was there with a group of friends for her birthday, so.) I played the movie and preshow from my new laptop, which is working out just fine. The Mac-like keyboard is taking some getting used to, but otherwise I have no complaints. And it'll be nice to actually get back to work, since I've fallen behind in a big way these last couple weeks.
Saturday, 17 December 2011 (simple headphone mind) 12:11pm After seeing them on the menu on Thursday, and then in water yesterday at the aquarium, I'm having sanddabs for lunch at the Wagon Wheel. Damn good. 3:22pm Stopped off at a Best Buy in San Jose and bought an Asus (U46E-BAL6) laptop. It's not cheap, especially since I got the two-year service contract where I can actually bring it to a place in person to get it repaired, but I intend to use this machine for at least the next two years, preferably three or four. Of course, that was what I'd intended with my old laptop, which I got from Dell in March. As in, March of this year. And it started falling apart a few weeks after the warranty expired. So, fuck Dell, bascially.
Friday, 16 December 2011 (transitional pathway) 12:01pm In Monterey. It's Marta's birthday, so after a far more reasonable-to-us lunch at Jose's Mexican Bar and Grill (and the contintental slash buffet breakfast at the Lodge was surprisingly good), we're now entering the Montery Bay Aquarium. I haven't been here since...gods, I don't know. Sometime in elementary school, I guess. 5:14pm The repair place called to say they were not able to fix the screen. They can replace it, but it would cost about three hundred dollars. In other words, it's time to get a new laptop. In other other words, frak. Oh well. "Investment for school" and all that. On the plus side, we did get to to be up close for both the sea otter and octopus feedings. 8:06pm Having a very expensive (but more us-like than Cafe Rustica) birthday dinner at the Flying Fish Grill in Carmel proper. Carmel-By-The-Sea, to be precise. I'm sure we could afford to live out here someday, if we really wanted to.
Thursday, 15 December 2011 (form in fascination) 1:30pm It was tense between us before we got out of town, and we didn't talk much along the way, but Marta and I have made it to our destination and checked into the Carmel Valley Lodge and had a much-needed meal at the Wagon Wheel Coffee Shop. Now, adventure. 4:24pm I'm not especially a fan of Henry Miller, but it feels necessary to visit his Library, since we're in Big Sur. We also made it to Pfeiffer Beach, which may or may not be the exact place in Big Sur where Roger Corman made movies and did acid, but it's lovely either way. 7:23pm Dinner back in Carmel Valley at Cafe Rustica. A little too fancy-pants for us, but on the other hand, we weren't the only girls there with crayon-colored hair. 8:32pm We've been in many hot tubs this past year, but I'm pretty sure this is the first one in which clothing is actually required. Alas.
Wednesday, 14 December 2011 (a vernacular surface) 11:51am Got a 96/100 on the research paper. The final class grades haven't been posted yet, but my math everything adds up to the mid-nineties, so I'm definitely passing. Whew. And now, since our best efforts to fix the screeen (including aforementioned cable reseating) have failes to stick, I'm going to drop my laptop off at the repair place and borrow one of Marta's old ones tonight. And tomorrow it won't matter, since we'll be going out of town.
Tuesday, 13 December 2011 (nosedive) 9:24am In line at the Pharmacy. The line's not as long as it was on Friday, but it's moving much slower, and the percentage of people who are complaining very loudly (and a few feet from my ears) is much higher. I have my headphones on and I'm reading Right Here on Our Stage Tonight!: Ed Sullivan's America and generally trying to maintain. Also, I'm wearing the new Docs for the first time, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to have bloody ankles by the end of the day. 10:43am Finally made it to the window, where I was informed that because they're "running behind," my prescription won't actually be ready for another two hours. On the plus side, I guess, I won't have to stand in the same line when I return. It'll be an entirely different line. When I parked in the garage, the attendant asked me how long I was going to be here. That may well be the funniest question I've ever been asked, or ever will be asked. 1:22pm Spent some time reading at Sugarlump, had lunch at L's Caffe, and am now back in line. The other line. There are still many people complaining very loudly, weaving in tales of other hardships in their lives. Awesome. 2:23pm Much to my surprise, I'm finally out. I only have a month's supply, and I'm going to have to go to Lyon-Martin in the near future for bloodwoork before I can get my next prescription, but I'm away from there now, and that's what matters. And I'm heading to Marta's place. She's not home yet, but I have keys. That's where we're at. (Did I ever get the keys to Wonderland? I honestly don't remember. More and more of those details are evaporating.) 7:11pm The Frolic article is doing really well, especially with the furries, which is the point to a certain extent. I am going to have to make one post-publishing edit, since I've heard from a couple of different sources that I credited the videos to the wrong person, but otherwise, I'm happy with how it turned out. The media person and co-founder of Further Confusion has also offered to give me a behind-the-scenes tour of the convention, which is pretty great. That's one more article I'll get to write. And now, dinner at Masala Dosa.
Monday, 12 December 2011 (transverse effusion) 12:31pm ...and, the Frolic article is up. So it turns out you get a much faster turnaround time when you write about things that just happened. Good to know. Re-reading it, there are a few things I would change, and at least one joke that could have been a lot stronger, but them's the breaks, and I'm already working on a couple new articles, both Christmas-themed. Since my laptop's screen is pretty much all dead, I'm borrowing one of Marta's old ones, and I'll be taking mine to a local repair place soon. Last-ditch effort before I just get a new laptop, which I'd rather not, even though I can use the "investment for school!" justification.
Sunday, 11 December 2011 (fire upon that crooked cross) 11:42pm I did in fact manage to write an article about Frolic for the weekly, and hopefully it'll go up tomorrow, but that's totally out of my hands. (My editor had sounded excited about the idea when I pitched it to him last week, though, so that's a good sign.) Also, the turnout for It's a Wonderful Life at Bad Movie Night was surprisingly low compared to past years, with only ten paying customers, five of whom left before it was over. Never can tell.
